Alisa Melekhina, a thirteen-year-old native of Ukraine became an American citizen at the age of two months. She has been living in Philadelphia for seven years, and is currently an eighth grader at Woodrow Wilson Middle School. Alisa has been taking ballet lessons since the age of six, and has been playing chess since the age of five. Along with performing in several ballet numbers such as the Nutcracker, Alisa has won numerous chess competitions. One of her most memorable victories was winning first place in the Pan-American (between North and South America) Chess Championships in 2001. That win made Alisa the U.S.A.’s youngest Women’s Fide Master at chess, at the age of nine. She recently competed in Greece for the World Youth Chess Championships, and took 6th place in the Girls Under 14 category among international players. Alisa wrote a book mysteries for creative writing assignments given by her sixth grade writing teacher, Ms. Eiler.
